Why we need to work? Do you ever think of this question before?
What is the purpose we go to work? Are you really work to improve your skill? to gain experience? or to earn money?
Nowadays, it is very obvious that people work to earn money rather than other purposes. Yes, we do work for money, we need money to survive, we need money to live, and the conventional way to earn money is to work, work work.
When we first working, of course we are earning for basic salary. Through out the years we do work hard to improve our skills and gain experience. Why we work so hard to improve our skill and gain experience? bottom line, we are look for better prospect to earn more money. With improved skill and greater experience, we are able to demand higher salary when we change our job from one company to another. End of the day, the main purpose to work is to earn money for our living.
So, the harder we work, the more skill and experience we gain, the more skill and experience we have, we are able to demand for higher salary. The higher salary we get, the company will load us with more responsibilities, with increased responsibilities, we get to work even more harder. The more harder we work, the more skill and experience we gain............ when you read till here, do you realize this we are repeating the same process again? Yes, we are going round the same cycle again, this is a never ending cycle when we work.
This is a cycle that we going round and round from the moment we start working, until we retired. In between, how many cycle we go through? this is really depends on your own ability. How fast you can pickup the necessary skill and move on to next cycle.
That's enough for telling you the work life. Let's take ourself one lever up and look back into this work cycle. You will see that we are going round the cycle. From all the cycle that we gone through, do you realized that the more cycle we go through, the more money we will earn, and at the same time, the lesser time we will have for ourself.
That's right. More cycle, more money with less personal time.
From here, you might argue that time is mainly depends on how you organize yourselves. But, in this real world, there is no free lunch, you do have to pay the price to earn more money. In working life, the price that we paid is our time. We trade our time for money.
Let's do a simple calculation and compare........
We assume that we start our career from the age of 22 and retired at the age of 55 (for female could be up to age 50, in this example, we take male for calculation), in total, we have to work for 34 years before we retired.
Take your startup pay as $2,000.00 with yearly flat increment of $300.00 (not taking inflation or compounding into consideration), by the time you work for 2nd year, your salary should become $2,300.00. 3rd year will be $2,600.00 and go on and on till you reach the age of 55. If your salary go by this ratio, by the time you reach 55 years of age, your salary will be $11,900.00. This seems a lot right?
Let's take a halt and look back, the normal working hour in most area in the world is standard to 8 hours per day. Initially when we start our career, we start with 8 hours of work a day, with salary increase, let say we add additional 10 minutes of working time every time company increase your salary for $300.00. So, how many minutes of additional time added to you by the time you reach 55 years old? Let's calculate it, er.......... bingo, its 5.5 hours in additions. Take 5.5 hours add to you normal working hour of 8 hours, you get 13.5 hours. Yes, you got to work 13.5 hours.
Yes, you work for 13.5 hours to earn $11,900.00 every month. Does this worth the money? worth the time you spend? This is quite subjective.
What I am going to tell you is that, with 13.5 hours of work per day, how much time we left for our self? how much time we left for our family? how much time we have for our personal use?
Have you ever thought of this question?
We come back again, take 13.5 working hours, plus 8 hours of sleep (I believed this is the optimum rest hours for human body), we get 21.5 hours in total. Yes, its 21.5 hours.
As all fo us know, we only have 24 hours in a day. From our calculation shown above, working plus rest already taken 21.5 hours, we only left 2.5 hours for our personal use.
Yes, its just 2.5 hours for our personal use, for our family, for ourselves.
Now, do you see what I am trying to tell you? I yet to mention the time you spend on the journey home, shower time, dinner time, etc.
Just take half an hour for traveling home, shower and dinner respectively, the total hours will shoot up to 23 hours. Oh my god, its 23 hours. We only left 1 hour for our family and ourselves.
End of the day, we work so hard to earn money, in turn, we just get to spend 1 hour time with our family or for ourselves. Do you think this is enough? Will your children complain that you not spending enough time with them?
Think again, think again. Is this what we want for our life?
Again, you might argue that you still have Saturday and Sunday to spend with your family, but, after 5 days in intensive work, do you still have enough energy to cope with your family on Saturday and Sunday? How much time you have on this 2 days for you to spend? 48 hours? Not really. Minus the 8 hours of sleeping time for 2 days, you only left 32 hours, 16 hours per day. 32 hours of active time for you and your family. How you going to spend this precious 32 hours with your family or yourself? I think I should stop here, not to memtion your most precious 32 hours that you have every week. You should know how much time you have every week. Some of you even have lesser than 32 hours during weekends. Am I right?
I believed, we should do something for ourselves so that we have more time for ourselves and at the same time we have sufficient money to support our standard of living.
