Spend Wisely .....Part 1 - Gasoline = Fuel = Petrol

Now a days with the hike on petrol price and inflation, but our salary (for employee) remain unchanged, how can we spend wisely? how can we control our personal finance to beat the inflation and petrol?

The prerequisite for spending wisely is to fulfill our basic needs of:
1.) Health
2.) Food
3.) Dress
4.) Stay

Do not cut on these prerequisite to save money. This is not worth the savings.

I would like to highlight a few points that we can aware of in our daily life:

1.) Gasoline (Petrol, Fuel)
Yes petrol, yes, this is what we are most concered for car owner. With the price of RM2.70 per litre, how can we save on our petrol cost? From my own reading from newspaper, web and together with my own experience, i strongly believed that the following method will help you to save some of your petrol cost and your monthly expenses.

1.1) The way you pump petrol
First of all, let's talk about how you pump petrol at petrol station. Nromally when you find that your car is low in gasoline, you will drive your car to petrol station and park you car infront of the pump station. Get yourself out of the car and make a payment (either cash at the cashier counter or credit card at the pump station). Once payment is made, you will take the pump gun and put the host into your petrol tank and stat filling the petrol. You will use the PRESS LOCK at the pump gun for auto filling. While the pump gun is auto filling, you probably will wash your windscreen or look around and relax. Once you get your tank filled, you will drive off the petrol station and continue your journey.

Is this what you always do? I believed most of the driver do.

The catch is at the PRESS LOCK. Nowadays most of the driver will use the PRESS LOCK at the pump gun for refilling petrol. This PRESS LOCK is very helpful for driver because you don't have to use your hand to hold the pump gun press to refill the petrol. If you use your hand to hold it, by the time you get your tank brim-full, you hand will get tired. This is the reason why they provide a PRESS LOCK at all pump gun.

The pump host is about 1 inch and when you pump petrol, the petrol will come along with air coming out from teh pump host, the harder you press on the pump, the petrol will flow faster together with air. Petrol with air will be pumped into your tank. With such a small tank inlet, how fast air can flow out from the tank when petrol is filling in? To overcome this, you try to press softer, not to totally press the pump, this will make the petrol flow slower, in turn, the air can slowly get out from the tiny tank inlet. I have tried this method, it gives me more petrol into my tank, this means that you pay less to get the same amount of petrol into your tank. From my unofficial calculation, I do save RM3 to RM5 each time.

Besides, try to pump petrol in the morning. From my reading on one of the email, petrol do react to temperature, when the temperature increase, the fuel particle (not sure what is the real name for this) will expand. If you pump in the afternoon with higher temperature compared to morning, you might get less fuel with the same amount of money you pay.

There is one more knowledge i learnt from F1 racing. The more fuel you pump into your vehicle, the heavier your vehicle will be, once your vehicle get heavier, you need to burn more fuel in order to get your vehicle moving. This is because fuel carries weight.

So, the key points are:
a.) Do not fully press the pump gun
b.) Refill petrol in the morning
c.) Don't pump full tank everytime

1.2) The way you drive your car
The way you drive your car will directly affect the fuel consumption of your car. If you like speed, you like to drive fast, first of all, I would like to tell you that the faster you drive, the higher the risk you exposed to. I will still recommend you to drive within the speed limit. Safety always come first. Secondly, the faster you drive, the more fuel will be burnt inside your engine.

The car require more fuel when the engine trying to get your car moving from static position (initial movement). So, everytime when you move your car, this is the time your engine burn more fuel. If you do realize, when you stuck in a traffic jam with slow moving of your car, you get burnt more fuel during this period of time. This is because your car will move a little bit then stop, then move again. Most of the time your car going through the process of initial movement.

Besides, when you are driving, try to maintain the constant speed of your car. Do not suddenly speed up or reduce speed. This is because when you suddenly increase your car speed, engine require additional power to speed up, this will consume more fuel for your engine. Same thing apply, when you suddenly reduce speed, your care slow down, in order to get back to the normal speed you usually drove, you need to speed up again, this repeat the one i mentioned previously.

So, the key points are:
a.) Do not speeding
b.) Avoid traffic jam
c.) Maintain constant speed

1.3) The way you plan your journey
This is the third section that I would like to discuss about. This is mainly talking about your ability to plan your route and journey. Normally when we want to go some places, we will always have a default route in our mind and most of the time we will follow that default route to our destination. If half way down the road you found out that your default route is full of cars and getting jam, you will try to find alternative route to your destination. Now you are on your alternative route. If you found that your alternative route is jam with cars a few minutes after you turn into this route, you will try to find second alternative route again. This end up you are going a big round before you reach your destination.

As all of us know, the road in town or city will get congested at certain time like morning when everyone get to work or in the evening when everyone rush home to enjoy their family time. These are the peak period that a lot of cars will be running on the road and most of the time will get stuck or jam at the bottle neck area like traffic light, area leading to less car lanes, not to mention if there is a accident on your way home. All these are the root cause of traffic jam.

So, as long as you stuck in the jam, you are wasting your fuel. Fuel get burnt faster and you got to refill more frequent. The more frequent you refill, the more expenses you incurred.

There are a few things you can do to overcome this and help you to save a little bit.

So, let's get straight to the key points:
a.) Plan your journey and route
b.) Plan your timing on the road to avoid peak period
c.) Listen to radio for road traffic status report (available during peak period)
d.) Read newspaper for events and functions (sometimes road will be closed for events)
e.) Meet half way. (If possible, both parties drive half of the journey to meet up.)
f.) Access on alternative from driving (possible to take a bus or LRT?)

I hope these small little tips will be able to help you to spend wisely on your fuel expenses. If you have better suggestions, please do not hesitate to leave your comments here. Thanks.

Beside saving your pocket, you are helping to make our environment greener and saving our planet.
